The demo trap
Most intermediate Claude users hit a ceiling around the same point. The tool impresses them in a first session, then slowly drifts toward a novelty they open when stuck rather than a system they run every day. The ceiling isn't Claude's capability — it's the absence of structure on the human side.
Productive Claude use has nothing to do with finding the perfect prompt. It has everything to do with continuity: carrying context forward, closing the loop at the end of a session, and building patterns you can run again tomorrow without remembering what you did today.
Pattern 1Session memory as a first-class habit
Claude doesn't remember your last conversation. This is a constraint, but it's a workable one — if you treat session memory as your responsibility, not Claude's. The approach is a session file: a short plaintext document you paste at the top of each new conversation. It contains open items, recent decisions, the current focus, and any context Claude needs to be immediately useful.
The session file doesn't need to be long. Two hundred words is enough for most working contexts. What matters is that you update it at the end of every session and load it at the start of every new one. Once that's a habit, Claude picks up where you left off within two turns instead of twenty.

Pattern 2Inbox triage as a repeatable workflow
One of the highest-leverage uses of Claude for knowledge workers is structured inbox triage. Not "write a reply to this email" — that's one-off. The repeatable version is: dump your inbox (or a week's worth of messages) into a session, ask Claude to cluster by urgency and type, and then work through the clusters in order.
The key is the classification prompt. Once you have one that produces clusters you trust, save it. Run it every week. What would take forty minutes of manual sorting takes ten — and because the output is structured, Claude can help you draft responses, flag dependencies, and log what got resolved.
Pattern 3Prompt reuse: build a library, not a habit of starting over
The most productive Claude users write fewer new prompts over time, not more. They build a small library of tested shapes — a triage prompt, a weekly review prompt, a spec-to-task-list prompt — and refine those shapes rather than reinventing them per session. The rule is simple: if you'd run a prompt again next week, save it with a short slug. If you wouldn't, don't.
A prompt library doesn't need to be elaborate. A single Markdown file with ten well-named prompts beats a folder of hundreds you can't find. The point is retrieval: you should be able to name the shape you need and paste it in under thirty seconds.
A realistic daily loopOpen, work, close
The daily Claude loop that holds up in practice has three beats. Open: load the session file and let Claude surface what's still unresolved. Work: use Claude on the actual task, and log any new decisions or open items as you go. Close: update the session file and add anything that should carry forward. The loop takes two to three minutes at open and close. It produces a working memory that accumulates value over weeks.
That exchange is only possible because the session file was loaded. Without it, the first ten minutes of a Monday session are usually spent re-explaining context Claude has no way to remember.
